Bouncing back to writing for a moment, I wanted to shed some light on Highlights for Kids. I actually remember Highlights from my youth (yes I can remember back that far). I find it amazing that Highlights takes submissions but its even more amazing that I am just now posting this information. (Put the tomatoes down and read further...geez so violent.)

Have you ever thought that you would love to write a book but you really do not have the time? The answer to that dilemma is short stories. There are not that many places that openly accept children's short stories but Highlights is a wonderful place to begin.

Warning: If you sell your work to Highlights, then they buy ALL rights to your work, copyright included.
No previously published work accepted.

Now we have all the warnings out of the way, Highlights accepts fiction, rebus, verse, nonfiction, craft ideas, fingerplays, action rhymes, and puzzles. Each piece of work features its own dollar amount and guidelines. Guidelines are available upon request.

When submitting a story for submission, its important to format properly. Following submission guidelines is one thing but there are a few tips you should follow to make sure you are on the right path.

Cover letters are important. Its highly important to write a cover letter for your submission detailing a biographical history or a brief synopsis of the story you are submitting.

Publishers do not want the feel that you are a machine that can only follow directions. You want to make sure your submission has life.

In the top left margin, enter your name, address, phone number, and email address as a header on each page.

In the top right margin, enter your word count. This lets the publisher know that you were conscientious of the guidelines set forth and your word count.

Use a spreadsheet to detail all of your submissions. Excel is a fantastic tool. List the name of the story, list the date submitted, and catalog the responses when you get them.

In the spirit of writing, I wanted to share a wonderful job with you guys. There is a company called The Current Events, a national students' newspaper that is hiring writers for their website.
