Since I will not be providing transcripts of the show, I am going to share some quick information about how to get a job online TRochelle Style!

STEP 1:

I don't think we are using our cover letters to our best abilities. A cover letter can serve as so many wonderful things. Let's say you have a lot of experience but you do not want the employer to think that you are unreliable and hop job to job. There is plenty of time to explain all your work history in the interview but on the resume you want to only go back about three years. What about all that other experience? COVERLETTER!
What about when you volunteered? I just know you gathered some work experience...but you are running out of space on your resume....don't fret...put it in the COVERLETTER! Example:

Dear Sir/Madame:
My name is John/Jane Doe. I would like to thank you in advance for reviewing my application for employment. While I have your attention, I would like to inform you of all I have to offer as a potential employee. I have worked several years in the medical field and gained an illustrious amount of knowledge. From the administrative to the medical aspect of my field, I have attained a very impressive amount of work experience as well. You will find that my extroverted behavior allows me to work well with anyone in any atmosphere. I have a very extensive clerical background. (feel free to expand on all your experience right here) You will also find that I have certifications that supersede the average expectations.


Thank you again for reviewing my resume and I look forward to hearing from you in the very near future.

This is just an example but you get the idea. Sell yourself...sell yourself...sell yourself! You have to make them think you are the best things since sliced bread! Tell them how wonderful you are and if you don't believe it neither will they so make them believe it. Tell them that you are a wonderful asset they do not want to let slip by. Tell them that you could tell them all day but you could show them even better! Be confident and arrogant in your cover letter. For some reason its appealing. Some believe that arrogance is not a good thing in an interview or cover letter but you could not be more wrong! Even employers say they do not want that type of behavior but in an interview its ideal. It shows your future employer that you are the diamond they have been looking for all this time!

Let's talk about how to recognize positive attributes to convey in a cover letter. It sounds quite technical but we all have a positive attribute. We just need to know how to convey the message to the employer. The best place to convey this message is in a cover letter.

I am sure that you have read all about how to write a cover letter so I will not repeat that too much. I want to focus on pulling your attributes out of you. Many of us think that we are incapable of working especially in the home, but we just have not realized our full potential.

How? That is easy. I will give you some examples of your hidden attributes.

A person who has to schedule many events (kid's sport's practices and events etc.) would be a good scheduler or coordinator. You would need to be confident enough to put that information in your cover letter. You could put that you were extremely organized and possess excellent coordinating and scheduling skills. Its true. Our activities outside of the workforce are equally as relevant as our activities performed in the workforce. If you have volunteered, the tasks completed during volunteer work is resume worthy as well as cover letter worthy. Never leave experiences out of a cover letter.

If you worked in the fast food industry, then you have done customer service. Albeit face to face, working in fast food is still customer service or customer relations. You will also want to note your ability to do ten key. Your keystrokes may not be tops but the fact that you can do ten-key just adds to your ability to brag.

Have you ever taught Sunday school? Well maybe you should think about what you did when you were teaching. You have taught a group of people and that number of people is important. Equally important is the time you spend teaching your own children. This kind of experience could get you a tutoring job working from home.

Never discount life experience. Life experience is key when attempting to find work. Knowing what you have done creates a path for you will do in the future. Just like bad work experience can follow you, so can the good stuff. Never leave off important life experience. You may not type 75wpm but you can type so put that your cover letter. Let the employer know that you may work at home but you work well with others and you are a team player. Inform them of how excellent a communicator you are and how you convey messages well. Employers love an employee or contractor that can communicate on multiple levels.

There are different ways in which to say the simplest things. Let's share some creative ways to say the simplest things:

1. A poet would want to write that they are a creative lyricist with inspiring ideas

****Now your turn, lets make a list to inspire anyone new to working at home. This could help in all fields, so think outside the box!****

Step 2:

Use VERBS!!! Verbs give your resume action. Words like responsible make you sound boring.
When you update or even compose your resume, people tend to put out some very personal information. There are times when jobs that we think are jobs sneak through the cracks and are actually spammers and identity thieves! You do not want these bottom feeders to know your personal information. Never put your social security number or address on a resume. You can easily kick your resume off with your name, email address, title (if you have one), and your phone number. This will allow the employer to get in contact with you without giving them access to how to get to your front door.

A little more advice when composing your resume is to please limit your wonderful accomplishments to one page. You have to think of a recruiter or employer as a child with ADHD and they do not want to read about your time as an Eagle Scout when you were 7 years old. This is true for working inside the home or out. You should also always start your resume off with a nice objective. Let the employer know what you expect from them and that you are not a "OneNightStand" type of employee. You need to let them know that you want to grow within their company.

One more and perhaps the most import tip when writing your resume. EXPERIENCE and SKILLS go hand in hand! If you have a skill then you have experience. Many times, people say they do not have any experience when they are well of experience. I made that mistake when I went to college (yes I went geez). I put down that I had never volunteered for anything. I did not get the scholarship I wanted because I had not volunteered while I was in high school. I felt really dumb since I had been a Sunday School teacher since the 7th grade, and taught Bible Study on Tuesday nights, did an afterschool program for children with disabilities, handed out snacks at the local bank after school twice a week, and helped take care of babies in the NICU at a local hospital. I never saw any of that as volunteer work (stupid huh?). Many of us do the same thing with our work experience. If you have children, you can multi-task, you may be a good scheduler. You might spear head your neighborhood watch, or do volunteer work for the church, a local organization, or anything. Its all work experience and you can put that in your resume. By all means, don't say....I dictate notes for the PTA, just say dictation. You have to pour honey on yourself to make sure you are attracting the right bears in this job world. Be creative!

All this talk about software got me to thinking. Do any of you miss the good old days of Microsoft Office 2003? I think I still have my original software but for all of you looking at 2007 and thinking. . . . WHY! I may have something to help with the conversion.

Microsoft 2007 uses a ribbon feature. This feature makes the 2007 version unattractive to some users. This is because it can be frustrating when trying to learn the new features. For users who do not have the time to learn all the new bells and whistles, there is an add-in called UBitMenu.

UBitMenu is a blast from the past. It places the Menu from the 2003 version into the 2007 version as a ribbon. You will still have all the 2007 elements but you will be able to easily navigate on familiar terrains. This Menu ribbon will be added to Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. New features from 2007 ARE accessible via the UBitMenu. This ribbon is there to make your life a little easier. When working at home, who doesn't need that? By the way, its free!

In lieu of yesterday's post, I figured I would share some more tips on what you can sell to make money from home. There are so many options for things you can sell from home! You can sell Mary Kay or Avon. You could sell for Pampered Chef or become a Southern Living consultant.

Then there are people who want the joy of doing it on their own, the entrepreneur. If that is you then you might want to make candles, make your own preserves, jellies, jams, detergents, soaps, bath salt, fragrance oils (not really make but you will see), lotions, sweet treats, dog food, and in-scents or just plain anything! The possibilities are endless but sometimes so are some of the expenses. I say start small and just get your feet wet. Make some sample items and sale on sites like Craigslist and Ebay and of course, give away a few so that word of mouth catches on!

Have you noticed that if you put organic or natural on something then you can sell anything? People love that stuff! I am not saying lie because that would be wrong but if you were making your own jam or jelly, then don't be afraid to tell people its homemade or all natural. People love this stuff. They want to have that homemade feel without going through all the work! You can charge more than what is reasonable to you because of the love you put in your product!

People don't care that those expensive bath salts are just Epsom salt and a little body fragrance oil put into a nice little bag or bottle. Its cheap to make and very simple. I use to make candles and I still do it for myself. You can buy fragrance and wax along with wicks in bulk. Pour them into Mason jars and sell those suckers for 6-7 bucks a piece! I also learned that a higher grade wax lasts longer but the cheaper grade wax allows the fragrance to really soar even though it melts super duper fast.

If you want to sell lotion, you can make any fragrance imaginable including cologne and perfume scents. You buy the base and mix it ...then pour it into bottles to sell. One other thing that is just as easy to make that I see a lot in bazaars (and they sell great on college campuses) is the little roll on bottles filled with fragrance oils. You can buy Cool Water, Hugo Boss, Delicious, Kenneth Cole....whatever you like and pour it into the little bottles and sell them for $5 a piece or 3 for $12 or something like that. They actually sell quite well and they sell quickly when
you offer a "twofer" (yep made it up...but you know you say it too lol). In-scents are just as easy. You just let them soak in the oil and let them dry and sell sell sell. I don't like them myself but you can appeal to a whole new audience.

I no longer have a dog but I did find some cool recipes to make dog food! People, sometimes, love their dogs more than humans and its because where many of us see dogs they see family! They want to take care of their families just like you want to take care of yours and they only want the best! Your ALL NATURAL HOMEMADE GOURMET DOG FOOD will give them all the reassurance they need that they are doing the right thing for their doggies!

Remember how our grandparents' grandparents' grandparents' use to survive? I am sure you don't since you were not around then but I think you get the point. Our ancestors survived off so much less and seemed to do so much more!

I know I know...different economy different situations........ but the goal is pretty much the same! We all want to take care of our families and pay our bills. We can do this without being slaves to our failing economy.

How:

We buy bread, but did you know that you can make your own bread for (well for me because I am a cheap bargain hunter that buys in bulk) $0.20 a loaf! Now prices will vary depending on where you buy your ingredients but the the ingredients are really basic. I bought a bread machine on Craigslist and with bread, cinnamon rolls, pizza dough, and biscuit dough, I made my money back a looooooooooong time ago!

How about making your own jelly? Jelly is not cheap but you could make your own jelly and save big! Now this site has pictures but if you are too busy for all that grape mashing and cheese cloth...you can go the cheater cheater pumpkin eater route like i do and buy 100% Grape Juice (or whatever juice you prefer apple, etc.) and make your jelly that way! This is another wonderful site with pictures.
Now for those who want the recipe without the grapes (pictures included), I highly suggest taking notes.

Okay, enough about jelly...what else can you do yourself that does not depend on the modern market? Maybe make Peanut Butter? Lets face it...everyone does not like that stuff when its all natural but its very expensive in the store and it makes super duper peanut butter cookies! If you don't believe me, make a batch with Jif (since they are on the safe list right now) and a batch with the homemade stuff. I guarantee the natural batch is best.

Enough of all that cooking...let's talk barter and trade! Yes I am too excited about all this...but pay attention! You could start a garden and trade your tomatoes for your neighbor's pear peppers! You could trade your homemade jelly for their spiced up honey peanut butter! We are quick to throw money at things nowadays...whether it be a problem, something we want, our children, or even something as serious as our health (trust me people can be foolish)! Let's not throw money out the door when we can just utilize those around us.

What does this have to do with working at home? EVERYTHING! We do all of this talking in blogs, but we do not use the same thought in everyday life! We network, utilize each other for info on new scams and job leads, help each other with recipes, and tips for organization, and we share our thoughts, and business ideas but how about sharing our natural abilities with those we love. This helped our ancestors and although it looks a little different its still the same. We can do the same thing now and not just online but out in the world as well.

Still wondering how this ties into working at home? Easy! Don't overload your calendar with working and you can take that free time and make and barter things that will save and make you money. Clear as mud? We are talking business here people. When you make jelly, you might make 8 jars and out of those 8 jars you could keep 2 and the rest could be bartered for something you need or even sold to make more money! Get paid doing something you always do...that's the theme for the day. Make 5 gallons of detergent and sell them in pickle jars for $3 a piece depending on the size of the jars! It doesn't cost much to make it and you will be doing something you need to do for yourself anyway! Its a win win situation and you can make money without the stress of deadlines. People say its a bad time to start your own business but that truly depends on the kind of business it is! We could all use a way to save some money so take your money saving tips and turn them into savings for others and cash in your pocket! You do not have to call it a business right now, just make something and get the ball rolling .....the money will soon follow!

Making your website more search engine friendly can be done several ways. Keywords are very valuable (as I have stated before) and should be used in the title as well as in your blog and the site's URL. Lets say your blog is gonna be about life in Texas. Your url should have something to do with a keyword that you will use often in your blog. http://www.TalkTexas.com (just an example not meant to be a real site) This would make a wonderful URL because you WILL use the word Texas often. "Ice Storm Chills Texas Heat" (title) Discuss in the body of your blog, the ice storm and of course Texas and make ice storm and Texas keywords. This is a good use of keywords. You do not want to overuse your keywords but this will allow you to get good use of them. Next, have a user friendly blog. Avoid having a blog that is very busy and congested. This is a turnoff for readers. Nice clean simplicity and a natural look is a appealing.

Try and avoid the cute little graphics if at all possible (I know how you feel ....who doesn't like the little care bear gifs but avoid anyway). Make sure your links work. You want credible links because the links are a reflection of your site. Do not give your viewers any reason to doubt your credibility. Also, make sure that you are able to present nice clean links that makes sense. "Read more about the ice storm at The Weather Channel" You want the hyperlink on the words ice storm and not on Weather Channel. You are bringing attention to YOUR content not necessarily the Weather Channel's website. Now you want to submit your blog link to directories and search engines. Click here for a list of sites.

You also want to link to as many blogs as you possibly can. The best way to do this is to find highly ranked blogs (that interest you of course ....yes this is a moral moment) and post comments to their blogs that in turn link back to your blog. They do this because when you comment you enter your blog url in the URL box. Last but not least, blog and blog frequently. Stay on topic and try not to fluctuate from topic. Also, DO NOT change your domain. You will loose a lot of traffic that way.

When submitting a story for submission, its important to format properly. Following submission guidelines is one thing but there are a few tips you should follow to make sure you are on the right path.

Cover letters are important. Its highly important to write a cover letter for your submission detailing a biographical history or a brief synopsis of the story you are submitting.

Publishers do not want the feel that you are a machine that can only follow directions. You want to make sure your submission has life.

In the top left margin, enter your name, address, phone number, and email address as a header on each page.

In the top right margin, enter your word count. This lets the publisher know that you were conscientious of the guidelines set forth and your word count.

Use a spreadsheet to detail all of your submissions. Excel is a fantastic tool. List the name of the story, list the date submitted, and catalog the responses when you get them.

• Edits , translates and publishes recipes
• Localizes content, ingredients, measurements and vocabulary for Japanese audience
• Categorizes recipes
• Performs recipe and food-related research

QUALIFICATIONS

•• Bilingual in Japanese and English.
• Must have thorough experiential knowledge of Japanese lifestyle, cuisine, metrics, and cooking terms
• Experienced in home and/or industry cooking
• High attention to detail
• Excellent writing and editing techniques.
• Strong analytical and organizational skills.
• Ability to problem solve and prioritize tasks both independently and in a team setting.
• Proficiency with MS Word, MS Excel and Outlook. Experience using Internet for research
• Culinary degree or food industry experience; excellent grammar skills
• Lawfully permitted to work in the U.S.

Okay guys, here we go, its Friday and a great day to recap who is hiring and who is not. Its also a great day to get some good tips on getting that great work at home job. If you do not know already, I write tips for a website called VirtualVocations. The tips I write are simple tips for working at home. I'm trying to get the word out more and more about working at home. With companies like Microsoft having major layoffs, its imperative that we keep more irons in the fire. Companies do not have a lot loyalty to their employees and its best that you try and get as many side jobs as possible. Remember the rule ......Never Pay to Work!

Today we're gonna party like its 2009! I would say 1999 but Obama was not President in 1999 so how much fun would that be? I am thoroughly excited about the inauguration of Obama because I actually had something to do with this election. The fact that many of us voted for the first time this year is meaningful (whether you were for or against Obama). It means we cared enough to change something! It was the first time in a long time that this country was in a major aggreement. We all agreed that it was time for a change to come!



Now it's time to party! I just don't know what to cook first. I know I am going to make a butter cake with chocolate sour cream icing and light sweet pecan crumb coat. As far as the Inauguration dinner, well hmmm.... since the Obama's forgot to send me a complimentary all expense paid ticket complete with airfare and lodging....I guess I will have to make something myself. I am thinking that maybe we should have some chicken Diegos (named after my baby boy).

Diegos are stuffed with chicken that has been sauteed with bell peppers and onions and placed along side some pepperjack cheese and rolled in homemade Indian bread and deep fried in cooking oil. On the side, I will serve some homemade salsa, sour cream, refried beans, and enchilada rice!

As for drinks, I am not too big on alcohol so I think I will make some virgin mojitos using lime juice, mint and ground vanilla sugar (compliments of my mocallete), and ginger ale.

I think that will be it....what....that's enough. Oh didn't I mention the only folks that will attend the party is the people that reside here! Look Obama is President ....he ain't paying for the party! We still have to be frugal!

When life gives you lemons, make lemon cake! That's the way that saying goes right? Okay okay close enough. Life is giving me a nice bunch of lemonades right now and rather than plummet the idiots that have hurt me with the lemons, I think I will make a lemon cake.

Look its natural to want to seek revenge on employer when they have wronged you, but that's not the woman scorned way to handle it. When an employer disappoints you or fires you (no I was not fired) there is no reason to bash them or to hack into their website and .....well let's not go there. Since revenge is best served cold then take that anger and resentment and use it to get a BETTER job or to go into business for yourself. Who knows, your employer could have made the best mistake of your life. Their ignorance can be your inspiration.

GO get that new job (that pays more and makes your old job look like slave wages)
GO start that new business or teach that new class
Whatever you do, LIVE don't exist!

I got a response from one new job I applied for and unfortunately, I did not get the job. I did, however, get the kindest response in the world. It just encouraged me to keep trying. I have to continue since, like an idiot, I announced my resolution would be to write a book! I wonder if no one ever sees the book, if it still counts?

Maybe I should shift my focus? I could take pictures of everything I can cook(like the yummy cake above) and give them to people who made the resolution to lose weight. Once they break the resolution, maybe they will buy stuff from me. What? I am getting desperate here!

Times are hard and so is the ability to put your hands on money. I watch these snotty rich kids on television spending a MORTGAGE on their wardrobe and I sit and think...... I wish they would go broke. I know its evil, but its honest. Is it really evil that I want to see Paris Hilton destitute? She did not work for her money, I can be mean to her. I could see if she was out doing a lot of good and she actually saved her money and was a frugal person, but she is not.

Okay T, its time to stop hating on Paris and get your piece of the cake (no not pie, cake is bigger). I am going to keep trying to go and get that giant slice of cake but I still want to help you all get yours as well so.......

Ringing in the New Year means ringing out your wallets! Its time to pay the piper. This is the one time of year I know a rich guy with a ton of money wants me, but only for my money. Yes I am talking about everybody's uncle, UNCLE SAM! Its time for us to face to the music and as an independent contractor the music is playing the same old song.... "I need a deduction and I need it now, Uncle Sam thinks I'm a cash cow".

This time of year is just another wake up call for me, it reminds me that 1) I need to save more and 2) I need to get another job. I tell myself every year that its time I reach out and venture into more things, but it never happens. I figure it will be easier to save than it will be for me to actually step outside my working comfort zone.

To ease the transition I have decided to apply for another job (yes I did it) and I have decided to sign myself up with a freelance site or two. I figure this will give me an option to work if I want and pass if I prefer. Its way less pressure and I can get my feet wet doing something I love....writing!
